How I Got Started in Dropshipping

Humble Beginnings

My entrance into dropshipping started as a test of a hypothesis I had developed after years spent being raised by a cable modem: The internet ALWAYS has a better solution, even if you have to dig a little. I had learned that you can almost always get a better price for products online than in the store, that you can determine the quality of said products better by looking at reviews that are only available online, you can often get the most cutting edge information about a particular subject from message boards than from a textbook.

With that experience well ingrained in my adolescence, I neared the end of my college career with the prospect of either working my ass off for at least 5 more years in academia to eventually get make a living as a professor, or to work at a low paying job somewhere that ate all of my free time. Surely, the internet could offer a better solution. So I began to dig, and dig, and dig. Hours of digging. The greatest the digs! I skimmed through the “work from home” BS that ends up being more work than a normal job (as you are expected to work for every minute that you are on the clock) and the spammy get rich quick schemes, to find some promising nuggets on the around the net on message boards.

Warrior Forum is one of the original internet marketing message board. It can be a great resource, but also a huge time suck. Be careful.

I found some forum posts from users who had made a good living dropshipping products back and forth from Amazon and eBay for a profit. While many commenters expressed skepticism, I was open minded. I knew that if most people don’t realize they can get the same blender selling at Bed Bath and Beyond for $249 on Amazon for $199, then there are likely many people who till trust eBay to give them better prices over Amazon (and vice versa).

While Amazon has eaten up the ecom market place, there is still are large and loyal eBay user base who see it as the best place to get deals.

So, I used the information pieced together from the BlackHatWorld posts plus a course I bought on Amazon to eBay Dropshipping and started listing!

I started seeing daily profits coming in steadily as I listed 5 news items a day, from $10 a day, to $20, to $30. I knew my hypothesis would stand true if I could earn $50 a day (the equivalent of $9/hour at 40 hours a week).

So I kept at it and as the Summer was drawing to a close, I was consistently hitting that $50 threshold. My hypothesis was confirmed.

I moved out on my own, and after getting lucky with an untapped product, was making $150 a day with a few hours of work just from dropshipping products from Amazon to eBay.


Things Get Ugly

Unfortunately, things can get ugly when working with protective companies like PayPal…

One day I check my email to find that PayPal suspended my account, effectively ending my only source of income.

It turns out one of my customers was a scammer who used stolen accounts to buy from me and PayPal thought I was somehow in on it (even though I reported the issue to the FBI and the Chicago PD)

After about 3 months of back and forth with PayPal, I was running out of savings and concluded that there was no way of getting my account and selling privileges back, so I went back to the internet that had helped me out so much in the past to look for a new way of bringing in income…


Welcome to Shopify!

I decided dropshipping from AliExpress via a Shopify store would be the easiest way to translate my skillset from eBay.

I dropped some money on a course, ready to crush it and start making some money again.

I started a niche store, ran Facebook ads, and saw no return.

“Okay, just a bad niche, I’ll start another one and will certainly crush it” I thought to myself.

So I researched another niche, build a site, sourced products, ran FB ads, and nothing.

I kept at this until I had 7 domains in my   account and nothing to show for it. I had even gotten a job doing newspaper deliveries to fund my ad campaigns as my savings were bone dry.

All of this came from following the instructions of my apparently very lucrative teacher to a T. That’s when I decided to give it one more shot, but this time we were going to do things differently.


I researched a niche that I KNEW other AliExpress dropshippers were doing well in. I sourced the same or similar products as them, created a great and responsive website, then, after reading about the power of Social Media Influencers, I created an Affiliate program in which I paid Instagrammers in my niche a commission to promote for me. This allowed me to get high engagement advertisements out without having to spend anything unless they worked, and let me tell you, they really @&$#ing worked!

I used the Affiliatly free trial to setup the affiliate program, and used the BlueStacks Android Emulator to send out messages quickly to Instagram users.


What resulted was nothing short of amazing…

I was quickly hitting $1,000-$3,000 in sales DAILY with a 30% profit margin.

I am now making a very comfortable living off of my main store, a few sub stores, and have helped many friends and clients successfully start their own eBay and Shopify stores by showing them the do’s and don’ts I had to learn way through trial and error.
